In English, we teach a broad curriculum covering reading, writing and grammar. We have a curriculum of high-quality texts which are used throughout school that builds children's knowledge of literature and their reading ability in a structured way.
Our teaching sequence starts with grammar weeks. The document below shows the sequence of grammar knowledge that we teach. This ensures that all pupils are able to accurately construct a range of sentences with increasing automaticity.
Once children have a secure understanding of grammar. We move onto sentence stacking weeks. This is an opportunity for children to see the grammar they have learnt in context. Sentences are stacked together chronologically and organised to engage children with short, intensive moments of learning that they can then immediately apply to their own writing.
Children then plan and write their own piece of writing. Additionally, children have the opportunity to independently apply the skills they have learnt in English and whenever possible be given the opportunity to apply these skills across the curriculum.
