All schools have a duty to ‘actively promote’ the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. These values were first set out by the government in the ‘Prevent’ strategy in 2011.
"A key part of our plan for education is to ensure children become valuable and fully rounded members of society who treat others with respect and tolerance, regardless of background. We want every school to promote the basic British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance for those of different faiths and beliefs. This ensures young people understand the importance of respect and leave school fully prepared for life in modern Britain."
Examples of the understanding and knowledge pupils are expected to learn include:
Schools must meet requirements of section 78 of the Education Act 2002
We celebrate and promote British values in all aspects of our school life. Our school vision of being our best selves is only possible if everyone is flourishing. Directly teaching and promoting British values is essential to creating a school community in which everyone feels safe, able to contribute, valued and respected.Through our vision and ethos, curriculum, behaviour, attitudes and relationships with each other and our community, we strive to always uphold and demonstrate the values that we are so proud of.
When you visit our school, take a look at how British values also link closely to our core Christian values on our hall display.
We define our British values as:
Democracy
Understanding that I can influence the way the school runs through the school committees and team and by talking to staff.
That I can also influence my lessons through contributing, sharing when I need help and asking questions.
Tolerance
To have fair and objective attitude to those whose faith and beliefs may differ from one’s own.
To recognise that it is unacceptable to dismiss the beliefs and opinions of anyone.
To also understand that discussions about sensitive issues will be controlled, structured and I should be respectful.
Law
I should understand that the school rules are used to mirror society laws and must be respected.
I should also recognise that there will be consequences for my actions should any rules be broken.
Respect
I recognise that everyone is entitled to their opinion as long as it does not promote extremist views.
I should understand that everyone is entitled to a voice within the classroom.
I will listen and respect others as I would like to be listened to and respected.
To recognise we all have a responsibility to promote and protect the well being of others.
Liberty
I am free to think as I see fit.
I have the freedom to make choices that affect me but I recognise I am accountable for all my actions.
To take responsibility for all my actions – good or bad.
